What Is Christmas?
Helen Dowd

Can
you feel
the excitement
afloat in the air
as Christmas time rolls around?
The stores are alight with attractive
displays, and goodwill in mankind abounds.
What is so special about this day? Why has
its phenomenon spread? Why is it a day that
most people enjoy, while others await it with dread?
The skeptics declare itís a heathen affair that commerce
has used for their gain; the Christian commemorate the birthdayof Christ,
when God, a humble baby became. Some children see only the gifts and the treats,
some grownups the food and the booze;
The twenty-fifth day
of the last month
in the year has
a meaning each
person must choose.

CHRISTMAS IS:

CHRISTMAS IS FRIENDSHIP:
Itís a time to review
The list of our old friends,
And to add a few new ones, too.
Itís a time to remember
our friends far and near;
a time to send greetings
and words of good cheer.

CHRISTMAS IS FUN:
Itís a time to relax;
A great time for laughing,
For parties, for snacks,
A time for good fellowship
With family and friends;
A season for frolicó
A time to pretendÖ

CHRISTMAS IS FORGIVING
The things that were wrong:
Words said in anger,
Slips of the tongue
Deeds of your fellows
You thought were not right,
Acts of injustice,
Things done for spite.

CHRISTMAS IS FORGETTING:
Your heartaches, your pain,
Your failures, your foul-ups,
Your work done in vain
Itís time to look forward
To new things ahead,
Forgetting the old year.
It soon will be dead.

CHRISTMAS IS FOREVER:
We can make that come true
By allowing Godís Spirit
From our hearts to shine through.
If we keep Christ in Christmas,
And allow Him His way,
Then the Spirit of Christmas
Will be with us to stay.
