Romans 8:28-39 Verses 38, 39: "Nay, in all things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come... nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
Right now the Pan American games are going on. It is all about winning and losing. We witness heights of glory when an athlete from our country wins a gold, silver, or bronze medal, and weep tears of disappointment when a contestant comes close to winning, and then misses out by a one hundredth of a second. But winning a gold medal is not a secure thing. Athletes have been known to be stripped of medals. I cannot imagine the utter despair for the one who has achieved such a great honor, to have it stripped from him or her.
In the passage I have chosen in Romans 8, Paul talks of things that are far more important than gold, silver, or bronze medals, which cannot be taken away. Verse 35 asks, "Who shall separate us from the love of God?" Just because trouble or disaster, or even persecution hits; just because suddenly we have lost our job, or our social security is cut down, or we have unexpected expenses; just because our bank account is empty, and our groceries are low, and our car quit on us; can these things separate us from the love of God? Read the verses again. They cannot! Godís love is lasting. Godís love is secure.
Letís look at the things of believers that are sure, certain things that believers cannot lose:
Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ cannot lose eternal life. John 10:28 "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ cannot lose forgiveness. I John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ cannot lose contact with God, through prayer. Hebrews 4:15-16. "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin... Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
Do you ever wonder why certain people seem to get ahead in life? Do you wonder, "What did they do that I haven't done?" Some people prosper even if those people, in your eyes, are not living right. Remember the little ditty we used to say when we were children? "Cheaters never prosper"? Well, as adults, we found out that is not true. Many people who cheat do get ahead.
Well, never fret. Here is a formula for anyone who thinks that they cannot be a winner:
If the devil comes to taunt you
And is knocking you aboutó
If you think that God's not with you
and your mind is filled with doubtó
Don't let Satan see you falter,
or he'll surely win the boutó
Put your faith in Christ your Trainer;
then just knock the devil outó
